SharePoint for Education Latest News
Invicta Grammar Schools website goes live

Invicta Grammar School is widely recognised as being highly successful and adopting an innovative approach, as demonstrated by the fact that they are consistently oversubscribed.

In order to reflect their core values of Education, Opportunities & Care and emphasise their brand identity, Invicta decided to re-launch their website.  Having already invested in Microsoft's SharePoint technology for their learning platform they decided to extend to use the same technology for their website platform.

Invicta met with a number of providers before selecting Novotronix to assist them in developing their website based on SharePoint 2010.  The first iteration of the new site launched in October 2011 with plans to add further content over the coming weeks.

See http://www.invicta.kent.sch.uk to view the site itself.

We are also able to provision Active Directory accounts, SharePoint groups, SharePoint sites and Learning Management applications from MIS data.

Great response to new Learning Platform at leading academy

Shelfield Community Academy, based in Walsall recently engaged Novotronix to develop a new Sharepoint based Learning Platform to be used by teachers, parents, students and governors.

Initial phases included the implementation of the core Sharepoint 2010 platform, departmental areas where learning resources can be stored and work assigned, timetable information, as well as a range of reporting for parents (to see their child’s attendance, progress, assessments) and school staff (to analyse data across years, subjects and groups).  Pupils from the school were involved in workshop sessions that allowed them to contribute ideas on what features they wanted to see in the portal and how the user interface would look.

Feedback since the launch has been excellent and there are many additional features in the pipeline for future phases.

Report Released on the Benefits of Sharepoint in Higher Education

Northumbria University and Eduserv have released a report on the use of Sharepoint in Higher Education.  They summarise that the rapid uptake of Sharepoint in this sector can be attributed to several factors including:

  • The ease with which SharePoint can be procured: none of the HEIs in this study went to competitive tender to procure SharePoint as it is included in their Campus Agreement withMicrosoft
  • Its provision of a wide variety of functionality including: content management for intranets and websites; collaboration sites for workgroups; workflow capability; and portal capability with single sign on and the ability to provide personalised content
  • The gap in the HE information environment: most HEIs have had content management systems in place for their teaching and learning functions (in the form of a Virtual Learning Environment - VLE) but did not have any such systems in place for their administrative functions, service functions or research work
  • Its devolution of a lot of power to local users: this suits the federal culture of HEIs, where there is a greater degree of autonomy in faculties and departments than in the divisions of organisations in other sectors.

Shropshire School leading the way in innovative technology
Parents and staff at Charlton School in Telford are set to benefit from an innovative IT system the school has developed.  The work, carried out by the school’s ICT team in partnership with Novotronix, is set to transform the way in which information on pupils is reported and communicated to parents and teachers.

Parents have been given individual login details so that they can access up to date information relating to their child's attendance, timetable, performance vs targets on a per subject basis and any positive/negative event information.  If they wish to discuss an issue then there is also the ability to initiate secure conversations with individual teaching staff.
